Situated in a prestigious Grade II listed building in the historic
market place, The Corn Exchange opened for trade in 1861 but was
soon being used as a community venue. In the 20th century as corn
trading declined, the venue was used for public meetings, dances,
discos, amateur dramatics and even as a roller skating rink. The
building was opened as an arts centre in 1993 after a £3.5
million refurbishment. On 1st June 2000 the operation of The Corn
Exchange passed from West Berkshire Council to The Corn Exchange
(Newbury) Trust, an independent charity.
In 2001 The Corn Exchange (Newbury) took up the management of New
Greenham Arts, which is situated at the old nuclear airbase on Greenham
Common.
Established in 1998 by Greenham Common Trust. The main aims of
the centre were to encourage a dialogue between commerce, science
and technology and the arts, to enable the local community to make
use of New Greenham Park and to establish a high class international
exhibition and performance venue.
